Electric Power

WHY INVEST

  • Due to its natural features, the Republic of Srpska ranks as an area rich in hydropower potential;
    • Hydropower potential of watercourses in the Republic of Srpska is estimated at about 10,000 GWh per year, of which almost 70% is unused;
    • Use of hydropower potential of installed power above 10 MW is about 36%;
    • Use of hydropower potential of installed power under 10 MW is about 6.5%;

  • Republic of Srpska has sufficient coal reserves for construction of large capacities for electricity production;
  • Production in the existing plants in the Republic of Srpska is about 7000 GWh per year, of which about 70% accounts for thermal power plants;
  • About 3500 GWh per year is necessary to meet the needs of local consumption, and the remainder is exported;
  • That very fact represents a significant investment potential of the Republic of Srpska. It includes construction of new thermal power plants in Ugljevik and Gacko, construction of hydropower plants on the river Drina, implementation of the Upper Horizons project, construction of a new thermal power plant on Stanari coal mine, and construction of a series of hydropower plants of medium and low power on the tributaries of the rivers Vrbas, Bosna, Drina and Neretva.
  • Investment potential also exists in the fields of other renewable energy sources (biomass, geothermal waters, wind) and it is the interest of the Government of the Republic of Srpska to diversify energy sources and become one of the leaders in the region in energy production from renewable sources.

INVESTMENT POTENTIAL

Most important natural resources used nowadays for energy production and generation are the following:

•    Hydropower potential
This potential in the RS is estimated at about 3200 MW of installed power or about 9500 GWh/year of generated electricity. Of that, about 736 MW or about 2400 GWh/year is used.
•    Coal
Coal balance reserves in the RS are estimated at about 684 million tons. The total exploitation reserves amount to about 578 million tons. These include about 353 million tons of lignite, and about 225 million tons of brown coal. Coal is mainly used for electricity generation at thermal power plants, and to a lesser extent for other purposes. Installed power of thermal power plants in the RS is 900 MW.
•    Biomass
In view of forest resources, it is estimated that the RS has an energy value of about 46 PJ of this energy source. Present consumption is about 16.9 PJ mostly in the form of firewood, and to a lesser extent in the form of pellet, briquettes, wood waste, forest and agricultural residue.
•    Wind
According to the RS Energy Strategy until 2030, theoretically usable wind potential is about 640 MW or about 1200 GWh/year. This potential is still not being used for electricity generation, although construction of two wind farms of planned installed power of about 100 MW or about 200 GWh/year is in the preparatory phase.
•    Solar energy
Solar potential in the RS territory is about (1.25-1.55) MWh/m2 of mean annual insolation. Use of this potential in the RS is insufficiently developed due to a relatively high price. Mainly, it is used for electricity generation to a lesser extent. Current solar power production is about 4.69 MW of installed power, or 5.8 GWh/year. This potential is still not being used for thermal energy production.
•    Oil
According to estimates, there are about 50 million tons of crude oil reserves in the territory of Posavina which are not being exploited. Rather, this energy source is imported and processed at Brod Refinery and Oil Refinery Modriča. Oil and petroleum products are a dominant energy source in final energy consumption in the RS and take the share of about 500 ktoe.
•    Geothermal energy
The RS has a certain quantity of this potential which has never been estimated exactly and is not being used, except in individual cases for heating purposes. Geothermal energy is only used for balneological purposes.

Gas Industry

The forecast growth in natural gas consumption in the Republic of Srpska represents a reflection of measures on the increasingly unstable market of oil products, as well as measures of reduced use of electricity in communal heating sector. Construction and development of gas infrastructure in the territory of the Republic of Srpska is aimed at providing secure and quality supply of both businesses and citizens with gas, technological development of domestic production including energy efficiency improvement, and environmental protection.

According to the Republic of Srpska Energy Sector Development Strategy until 2030, the level of investment in gas infrastructure of the Republic of Srpska is estimated at about 500 million euro (construction of the main gas pipeline, construction of distribution networks, and construction of gas cogeneration thermal power – heating plant).
