Electric Power

WHY INVEST

  • Due to its natural features, the Republic of Srpska ranks as an area rich in hydropower potential;
    • Hydropower potential of watercourses in the Republic of Srpska is estimated at about 10,000 GWh per year, of which almost 70% is unused;
    • Use of hydropower potential of installed power above 10 MW is about 36%;
    • Use of hydropower potential of installed power under 10 MW is about 6.5%;
  • Republic of Srpska has sufficient coal reserves for construction of large capacities for electricity production;
  • Production in the existing plants in the Republic of Srpska ranges between 5200 and 6200 GWh per year, of which about 55% accounts for thermal power plants;
  • About 3500 GWh per year is necessary to meet the needs of local consumption, and the remainder is exported;
  • That very fact represents a significant investment potential of the Republic of Srpska. It includes construction of new thermal power plants in Ugljevik and Gacko, construction of hydropower plants on the river Drina, implementation of the Upper Horizons project, construction of a new thermal power plant on Stanari coal mine, and construction of a series of hydropower plants of medium and low power on the tributaries of the rivers Vrbas, Bosna, Drina and Neretva.
  • Investment potential also exists in the fields of other renewable energy sources (biomass, geothermal waters, wind) and it is the interest of the Government of the Republic of Srpska to diversify energy sources and become one of the leaders in the region in energy production from renewable sources.

INVESTMENT POTENTIAL

Most important natural resources used nowadays for energy production and generation are the following:

WATERCOURSES
Total technically useful hydropower potential of the Republic of Srpska amounts to about 3200 МW of installed power and 9500 GWh of average annual production of electricity. Out of that, about 2420 GWh/year is being used. A huge investment opportunity lies with the fact that over 70% of water potential is unused.

COAL
Brown coal and lignite reserves are distributed in seven significant coal basins: Gacko, Ugljevik, Stanari, Miljevina, Kotor Varos, Ljesljani and Ramici. Total balance reserves amount to 684 million tons, including 390 million tons of lignite and 294 million tons of brown coal. Total coal exploitation reserves amount to 578 million tons, including 353 million lignite and 225 million tons of brown coal. The coal is mainly used for electricity production at thermal power plants (over 90%).

RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES

BIOMASS
The Republic of Srpska has a significant biomass potential available for electricity and heat energy production. Total theoretical biomass potential in the Republic of Srpska is estimated at 31.08 – 46.24 PJ. Most part (59%) is biomass suitable for burning. It is followed by 39% share of biomass suitable for biogas production from communal waste, animal husbandry and energy crops. Present consumption of biomass for burning is 16.96 PJ, which represents 92% of the potential generated from sources at the Republic of Srpska territory.

GEOTHERMAL SOURCES
Research has been conducted showing that a large part of the Republic of Srpska has prospects related to the presence of geothermal waters, mostly in the territory of Posavina, Semberija, Banjalucka Kotlina and Lijevce Polje. Energy potential is estimated at 1260 РЈ. Largest potential for use of this energy source lies in aquaculture, agriculture, and heating of settlements.

WIND ENERGY
A Wind Atlas has been prepared for the territory of the Republic of Srpska and it needs to be verified by wind measuring. Theoretically useful potential of wind energy is estimated at 640 МW and 1200 GWh/year.

There are 13 locations for wind power plants distinctive for their available wind potential. Subject to their feasibility, priority should be granted to the locations for construction of medium-size wind power plants. All locations but one are in the southeastern part of the Republic of Srpska. Due to various limitations, implementation of wind power plants of maximum power of 100 or 200 MW is possible by 2020.

SOLAR ENERGY
Mean annual insolation of horizontal surface in the Republic of Srpska ranges from 1.25 МWh/m2 in the northern parts to 1.55 МWh/m2 in the southern parts.
Use of solar energy in the Republic of Srpska is possible in two forms: solar collectors for preparation of hot water and heat, and photovoltaic systems for production of electricity.

Gas Industry

The forecast growth in natural gas consumption in the Republic of Srpska represents a reflection of measures on the increasingly unstable market of oil products, as well as measures of reduced use of electricity in communal heating sector. Construction and development of gas infrastructure in the territory of the Republic of Srpska is aimed at providing secure and quality supply of both businesses and citizens with gas, technological development of domestic production including energy efficiency improvement, and environmental protection.

According to the Republic of Srpska Energy Sector Development Strategy until 2030, the level of investment in gas infrastructure of the Republic of Srpska is estimated at about 500 million euro (construction of the main gas pipeline, construction of distribution networks, and construction of gas cogeneration thermal power – heating plant).
